Bridge Information
This bridge carries the Norfolk Southern Lehigh Line across the Lehigh River. The rail line is freight only and carries approximately 25 trains per day.
The majority of the Lehigh Line was opened in September of 1855 as the Lehigh Valley Railroad. This bridge was likely part of the original construction, and has the year 1916 engraved in the pier cap. Passenger Service ended on the Lehigh Valley in 1961, and in 1976 the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) merged to form Conrail. The Lehigh Line was acquired by Norfolk Southern in 1999 when CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern jointly acquired Conrail and then divided its assets between them.
